Flycatcher teamed up with CBS Sports and Second Spectrum to bring forth the revolutionary CBS RomoVision™, a pioneering sports broadcast tool designed to augment viewers' understanding of the game with real-time insights.

Created as a one-of-a-kind storytelling tool for broadcaster Tony Romo, RomoVision™ integrates live tracking data to offer in-depth game analyses, elevating the viewing experience. After one season of raising the bar for football replay executions, RomoVision™ was awarded Best Technical Achievement at the 2022 Sports Emmy Awards.

Our challenge was considerable: designing an on-screen product for live broadcasts that was intuitive, engaging, and versatile. Working with Second Spectrum's development team, our considerations included determining the optimal layout for data visualization, deciding between 2D and 3D perspectives, and maximizing value consistency in execution.

Building a modular system was paramount, allowing for fast conversion from data to visuals in 0.2 seconds.

Kicking it off


Our design had to integrate seamlessly with Second Spectrum's tech stack and accommodate varied broadcast applications, from instant replays and studio show segments to bite-sized social media content, while adjusting for multiple aspect ratios.

SINGLE REPLAY

REPLAY PACKAGE

After only 6 weeks of development, RomoVision™ made it's debut in November 2021 to much fanfare. We pushed to meet our partners' deadlines with a compact design,  introducing audiences to the new experience while making minimal intrusion to the standard broadcast.

We delivered two formats: a standalone single replay + a replay package consisting of multiple camera angles leveraging the tracking data in different forms.

Now let's go bigger


After launching with a slimmed down, minimally intrusive version, our partners wanted the product to evolve into a more immersive experience. We then expanded on our initial release with a redesigned fullscreen RomoVision, bringing fans into a dashboard that feels like mission control for the entire broadcast.

Results


Meticulous UI design, dynamic motion design, and modular versatility echoing CBS Sports' distinct visual identity resulted in an on-screen experience that enhanced CBS's NFL presentation, ensuring a fluid and insightful viewer experience. Flycatcher proudly contributed to reshaping how sports enthusiasts engage with and comprehend the complexities of NFL football, proudly contributing to the Best Technical Achievement at the 2022 Sports Emmy Awards.
